Too many Carbs, Too much weight

In we ring the New Year with hopes and expectations and lots of resolutions for 2018. Some we will keep, some we won’t, and some we completely fail at doing. One resolution that needs to be on your list for 2018 is an absolute resolve to reduce carbohydrate intake for the coming year. Unless you are working out several hours a day, running, or work in a demanding physical job, YOU ARE KILLING YOURSELF WITH EXCESS CARBS.

First of all, what are carbohydrates? Carbohydrates are a necessary food group that provides fairly instant energy to the body for normal metabolism and daily activities. Therefore, it is a necessary part of your diet, but in moderation. Carbs consist of breads, cereals, sugar, everything made with sugar (including sodas and sweet tea), potatoes, rice, and pasta just to name a few. Carbs as I stated provide the energy for metabolism and the breakdown of protein in your diet. However, in most of our normal sedentary life styles very little carbs are required to drive that metabolism. As a matter of fact some studies show, as little 600 calories per day are required to run the basics of your daily function. On average as little as 1500-1800 calories is enough for a moderately active person. Now on to the problem. Look at how many calories you intake just in one day. Most everyone averages about 3000+ calories of daily food and drink intake. If you are not active, and I’m not talking about moving your chair around the office, you are going to store at least half or more of those calories. That storage is called FAT. Now repeat this intake day in and day out and you can see why fat accumulation can occur and why the obesity rates are climbing rapidly all over the US. In fact, SC is now 12th on the list of the most obese states in the US. To our credit that is a change from 8th the year before. (Mississippi is #1)

Obesity has been classified as a disease and excess carbohydrate intake has been pegged as one of the main causes. With the almost exponential increase in obesity rates over the years there has been a parallel increase in Type 2 diabetes where the size of the body and the calorie intake outstrips the ability of the pancreas to produce enough insulin to metabolize the sugars. This leads to more requirements for medicine to increase the insulin output. Ongoing elevated blood sugars can then lead to an increase in heart and vascular disease resulting in poor circulation to the extremities and eventual numbness and possible loss of a limb.

Obesity appears in some studies to have a negative effect on cancer risk, recurrence, and mortality. In a position statement by the American Society of Clinical Oncology as many as 84,000 cancer diagnoses each year are attributed to obesity with implications of 15-20% direct mortality related to obesity. There has been a direct link to an increase in breast cancer due to obesity.  As it relates to orthopedics and joint problems, THE KNEE AND THE HIP JOINT WERE NOT DESIGNED TO CARRY SEVERAL HUNDRED POUNDS and, therefore, are prone to wear out earlier in life.

What can be done? Understand that Carbs are the most addicting food group. Simple carbs have a way to drive your appetite center to want to eat more and order more food. That good smelling bread that is put on your table at the restaurant can drive your appetite to order more food.  As fat builds up, a hormone in the fat called Ghrelin can further drive the appetite center to crave more and more food. See the endless cycle? Control is not easy. When going on a weight loss diet the hardest thing to do over the first week or two is to not eat carbs. Once that time frame has past it seems most patients aren’t grabbing for the carbs.

Drinks have carbs and count in the overall calorie intake. Many patients think drinking several sodas daily doesn’t count. A 12-ounce regular soda has 135-150 calories, all from carbs. A 20-ounce soda has 250. Drink 2 or 3 a day and you are at 300 -750 calories of that total intake. Add some sweet tea (usually 120 plus calories per glass) and you may exceed any recommended total daily intake for food and drink.

It’s a New Year, a new beginning. Make determinations that an obese life does not have to happen to you. Stop the Carbohydrate poisoning that is ruining your life. Look for ways to decrease your carb intake and take advantage of every opportunity to eat smaller portions and healthier choices. If you don’t exercise, don’t commit to a gym that will only be a memory in a month. Start small by short walks where you live. Park away from the door at work. Take the stairs at work or at church instead of the elevator. Do multiple small things each day and then work toward a longer walk or workout. Most of all commit to be healthy. Get the grilled chicken without the bun, use the vinaigrette dressing instead of the Ranch and don’t get fries with anything. Water is good too especially with a little lemon squeeze. If you must get dessert, only a bite or two will do. Remember, GET LEAN IN ’18.

No Cellulite. Get Beach Body ready

Finally, March is here. Daylight Savings Time is back and spring is here in about 3 weeks. You are starting to think about shorts and bathing suits but then you look down and Yikes, CELLULITE. Now you remember why you always wore a cover-up or longer shorts last year. This year, be ready with VASER SMOOTH.

There are many treatments that promise to eliminate Cellulite but most are only temporary. Vaser Smooth, however, gives you a lasting permanence not found in most other treatments. With VASER SMOOTH a small amount of numbing solution is placed under the skin of the leg through a small puncture site. After adequate numbing the Vaser Smooth instrument is guided specifically to the marked cellulite bands and the bands are severed and sealed with ultrasonic pulses. Because of the permanent damage to the cellulite bands they do not grow back together so that you have lasting results. Compare that to the many external cellulite treatments that only suction the skin and “pop” the bands giving you a temporary smoothing. Unlike with Vaser Smooth the bands are not permanently damaged and will grow back in a matter of 3-6 months. The difference is that by ultrasonically cutting and sealing each band with Vaser Smooth those bands will not reform.

Vaser Smooth is performed in our office at Genesis Cosmetic Laser Center and only takes about an hour or so to get you on the road to smoother legs. It can be done as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with LipoSculpting the legs if reshaping or reducing the legs is desired. The technology is amazing and has proven itself worldwide as one of the best long-term solutions to Cellulite.

Don’t hide your legs this Spring and Summer. We have the solution at Genesis. Call us today at 843-669-2220 for a free consultation and learn more about Vaser Smooth and our other offerings to make you Beach Body Ready.

Laser your way to tighter skin

Many of you have asked specifically how the laser works in both Liposculpting and skin tightening.  At Genesis we have several lasers of different frequencies that are used in different ways.  First of all let’s address the one we use in LipoSculpting.  The frequency of our Lipo laser is tuned so that it maximizes both skin tightening and disolving  of fat.  Basically we place it under the skin via an artificial quartz fiber and use it to make micro damage on the underside of the skin.  We are very careful not to burn the skin but only to do micro damage.  The body wants to heal those micro burns so it sends in some platelets that then bring in growth factors and cells to make new collagen protein to replace the damage.  The new collagen is very elastic so it tends to shrink and, therefore, pull the skin tighter as it does so.  This results in a remarkable lifting and tightening of loose skin that has stretched out due to excess fat that is also being removed.

Likewise, a similar laser with a different frequency is used externally on the face and neck to tighten  wrinkles, close open pores, and lighten pigmented areas.  This is our Fraxel laser.  The Fraxel handpiece is rolled over your numbed skin and very tiny “pixelated” pin size punctures in the skin are the result.  Again there is micro damage under the skin that results in new collagen protein being formed that shrinks as it heals.  The result….tighter skin and less melasma.

We also use the laser for hair removal.  This laser has a frequency that is tuned to the color of dark hair and is , therefore, absorbed by it.  The laser heat is then transmitted into the hair follicle which is then destroyed.   Reapeat treatments are then done to assure all the follicles in that hair “pore” are destroyed by the laser.

Next blog post…..our newest laser for vaginal rejuvination and bladder leakage.  Stay tuned.

Vaser Smooth..Your answer to Cellulite

If unsightly Cellulite has you down and wanting to wear long pants this summer, listen up.  Genesis offers the Vaser Smooth for long term Cellulite reduction in the leg and buttocks area.  Don’t be fooled by a lot of the non-invasive cellulite treatments that clutter the market.  All are temporary.  Basically cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that have fat between them, giving you that rippled look on your legs.  The external treatments merely break those bands temporarily but don’t destroy the culprits.  Yes, you look good for 2 or 3 months but the bands re-form and no effect is noted after a time.  Our Vaser Smooth treatment goes way past the temporary band breakage by destroying much of the band tissue, not allowing it to heal and re-form.  Result is a longer lasting more permanent solution to your cellulite problem.  The treatment is done by placing a numbing solution under the skin and then doing a Vaser fat dissolve of the affected area.  This is followed by using our specially designed Cellulite instruments to break and destroy the bands that are giving you the irregular look.  Because of the power of those instuments protein damage to the cellulite bands will not allow them to heal.  If volume reduction of the leg is necessary we can also lipo suction the leg.  In many cases that is not necessary because the main culprit is the cellulite.  Long term there is a marked reducution and elimination of the banding and a much improved look to your legs.

So…Hey…don’t be that person in long pants all summer due to a condition that is easily treated.  Call us about our Vaser Smooth cellulite treatment.  You won’t regret it.

Generic Drug Rip Off

I came across this article in Bottom Line Magazine that many of you will find interesting.  I have noticed as you have that most of the generic drugs have risen as much as 300% since the beginning of the year.  Some drugs that have been around for 40 years are outrageous in price.  Read below for some ideas.

Dr. O’Dell

The Generic-Drug Rip-Off

Using health insurance to fill a prescription for a generic drug could dramatically increase your out-of-pocket costs, particularly if you have not yet reached your policy’s annual deductible. That’s because people who use health insurance have to pay the price that the insurance company has set for the drug, and with generic drugs, these prices often are much higher than the prices you might pay when no insurance is used—sometimes hundreds of dollars higher for a 90-day supply.

Here’s what happens behind the scenes: Many generic drugs cost pharmacies 10 cents a pill or less. A value-oriented pharmacy, such as those at Costco, Walmart and Kroger, or a reputable online pharmacy, such as GoodRx.com and HealthWarehouse.com, might charge as little as $4 for a 30-day supply or $10 for a 90-day supply—if you don’t use insurance. What’s more, even after you reach your deductible, many insurance policies require a co-pay that is higher than what these types of pharmacies charge for generic drugs.

Among the many widely used drugs that can be purchased without insurance as generics for as little as $10 for a 90-day supply are the blood pressure medications atenolol, carvedilol, clonidine and furosemide…blood-clot-prevention drug warfarin…diabetes drugs glimepiride, glipizide, glyburide and metformin…cholesterol medication lovastatin…antibiotic amoxicillin…and pain medication naproxen.

What to do: When filling a prescription for a generic drug, check whether it’s cheaper to fill the prescription without using your coverage. Also, ask pharmacies whether they have a membership or rewards program that can further reduce the cost.

On the other hand, if you expect to spend a lot more than your deductible for medical costs in a given year, it might make sense to pay the higher prices so that you get past the deductible period more quickly. In some cases, depending on the specifics of your coverage, that might result in greater overall savings.

Get up and move it.

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.  Plato

A lot of people make excuses to not exercise.  However, it is an essential part of your overall health and can greatly contribute to how you feel and how you look.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO TO A GYM TO EXERCISE.  That is the biggest excuse that I hear.  Heck, I don’t like to go to a gym either.  I have to drive there, walk in, go do the exercise, talk to people if they talk to you, then go back home.  A lot of wasted time.  Now I am not down on the gym or group exercise as it is a wonderful thing if you have the time and disipline to go.  That’s where a lot of people fail.  That extra half hour to get ready to go then drive there and back is just not in your day.  There is so much you can do in the comfort of your house.  There are numerous studies that show just 15 minutes or so of combined exercise several days a week can accomplish a new level of fitness in you.  Just think, you don’t have to do your hair or dress in any nice new gym clothes.  You can exercise in your PJ’s if you want.  You don’t even need a treadmill at home or other machines.  You can get a small set of dumb bells to start or do exercises using your own body weight.  Warming up with jumping jacks or high stepping in place and waving your arms is great to get your heart pumping and your brain awake.  You can follow that with some push ups, crunches, body weight squats or any numerous isometric exercises.  It works.  With enough time you will not want to miss doing them…and all in a simple 15 minutes of your day.  Attached is a link to an interesting article that hopefully will help you get started.

Platelet Rich Plasma…Magic in your blood

Many of you may not have heard of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) but it is one of the most phenominal natural substances known to promote healing and enhance results in cosmetic treatments.  So what is it?   Simply your blood has 3 types of cells….The red cells carry the oxygen to the tissues and take away CO2,  the white cells fight off infections and help with your immunity, and the platelets are the powerful healers in the blood.  Anytime you have an injury such as a cut, abrasion or a bruised area the platelets are rushing in to direct the clean-up and healing processes.  They direct the fibroblasts to form new skin and support tissues i and direct the stem cells to make new blood vessels and other necessary tissue.  That’s where we use them in cosmetics.

After drawing your blood we spin it down in a special tube that separates the red/white cells away from the platelets.  The platelets are then harvested and reconcentrated in your serum to give you a more potent platelet mixture.  We then activate the platelets using a Calcium solution which makes them ready to “work”.  These activated platelets can be injected into the scalp to stimulate hair growth or can be injected along with Juvederm fillers to enhance the skin and make the filler last longer.  I have even put PRP on thin non-healing leg skin  and got healing in 3 weeks.  The main thing we use it for is on fat transfers.  These activated platelets when mixed with your fat stimulate millions of stem cells that go on to make new vascular supply and structural support to the newly injected fat. This gives you a better look and more longevity with the transfer.  Injecting PRP under old acne scarring is also very successful to erase the “pot marks” that are left behind.

Best of all…it’s all natural… from you, your own healing power in your blood.

Happy February.    Stay healthy.
